". The reason why I voted in favour of the Öry report is its topicality regarding the issue of social inclusion in the 10 new Member States. The rapporteur has given a detailed account of the basic challenges faced by the new Member States in fighting poverty and social exclusion. It was mostly MEPs from the new Member States who presented arguments highlighting the seriousness of this topic during the debate. Their speeches centred on the theme of poverty, which also involves the social inclusion of children, or in other words has an impact on the prospects of the new generation. By way of example, statistics indicate that in my country, Slovakia, as many as 21% of citizens live below the poverty threshold, mostly in less-developed regions of the country. This report provides a basis for addressing the tremendous challenge faced by the EU in achieving the ambitious Lisbon goals of employment growth, social cohesion and sustainable development. The EU’s progress will depend on its approach to the fundamental rights of the EU citizens who are most at risk, and who mainly live in the 10 new Member States. This approach should be guided by social inclusion and the fight against all forms of discrimination."@en1
