"Mr President, thank you for allowing me to intervene at this point; I realise there are a lot of votes to get through. It is important to note the uniqueness of this particular resolution. It relates to an agreement between both sides of the rail industry, employers and unions, and is the first such agreement representing 95 per cent of the workers and the employers in that industry.
Strictly speaking, Parliament has no direct role in the matter; it is a matter for the Council to approve. But I am hopeful that if we can get overwhelming support for it here today the Council will, as a matter of urgency, adopt it without further delay. It is an important initiative and we should encourage not only the rail industry but also other sectors of industry to adopt this kind of social partner agreement on working conditions for employees."@en1
