"Mr President, the resolution on the future of Europe contains part of the historical truth. I congratulate our colleagues here. The remarks made about the War and post-war relations also mention the captive nations left behind the Iron Curtain. In 1988 and 1991, the Russian people were considered, and often acted, as one of those captive nations, striving for democracy on the same side of the barricades with us, the Baltic nations, against Soviet totalitarianism. Mr Putin does not remember that because, at the time, he was still acting against Germany. Today’s leadership of Russia is not making much of an effort to turn that conception of self-determination from the political and moral status of formerly captive nations to that of a nation. Therefore, the dismantling of the former captive nations is treated now in Moscow as the greatest tragedy for one of them. Allegedly, the Russians were different from others in their prisons. Such a misunderstanding is not just insulting and spiritually destructive for the ordinary Russian people, but also harmful for sincere cooperation. Mr President, you have a difficult task in this undertaking to urge the current Russian leadership to abandon their legacy of Soviet mindset and stop deploring everyday Russia’s captivating past. Our resolution opens the way for that."@en1
