"Question No. 37 by Georgios Karatzaferis ()
On 22 March 2005 the Greek Minister for the Environment, Mr Souflias, stated that the former Hellinikon Airport in Athens would not be converted in its entirety into a park for the capital because – according to him – Greek taxpayers could not be asked to pay for the construction and maintenance of such a park; this meant that at least 100 hectares would be developed. The inhabitants of Athens have to contend with very poor air quality, since it is the EU capital with the lowest proportion of green space per inhabitant. Has the Greek Government asked the Commission to co-fund the construction of this park? Do the other major cities of the European Union have parks?"@en1
