"I thank the Commissioner for his answer. From numerous media reports, it appears that the Commissioner with responsibility for trade is calling for restraint in this affair and has made a plea to avoid what he calls protectionist thinking. On the other hand, the United States Government has accepted a request from its textile industry to investigate the sharp increase in the import of textiles from China. The US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has promised a swift and fair inquiry. He said: ‘We want to do it quickly and we want to do it right’. What is so very different about EU textiles as to lead to what appears to be a very prudent approach by the Commission, rather than the swift and fair approach of the US?"@en1
