". Madam President, honourable Members, I should like to start by thanking both the rapporteur and the House as a whole for their first-rate work, which has been carried out in an extremely short space of time, given the complex and sensitive nature of this issue. Our aim in revising the directive is quite clear, namely to ensure continued high standards of health and safety at work. It is well known that a link exists between work-related accidents and excessive working hours. At the same time, we are all aware that the future will belong to flexible businesses that introduce innovative working methods, in so doing motivating their workers to be more productive and also offering them high-quality jobs. In the interests of our fellow citizens, we must respond to these new challenges to the best of our ability. We must flesh out the European social model, one of the founding principles of which is quality as a determinant of competitiveness, and in fact the need to do so has also emerged from public consultations on the Constitutional Treaty. The Commission’s aim has always been to ensure that the revised directive maintains the current level of protection for workers at the same time as contributing to a more flexible organisation of working time. This was the intention behind the original proposal, and I believe that the same goal is pursued by those of Parliament’s amendments that the Commission will be able to accept. I will comment in more detail on the Commission’s position on the amendments that have been tabled after listening to your debate."@en1
