"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the latest news from France is not encouraging. In the run-up to the country’s referendum on the Constitution, journalists working for the state-run media, in particular television channels, have mounted furious protests, accusing the authorities and the media bosses concerned of a serious lack of objectivity in their coverage of the European Constitution. Events have taken a dramatic turn, and there have been accusations of blatant bias. I believe that this House should prove itself equal to the task of addressing this issue. After all, who will see to it that the media tell the truth in the run-up to the key political decision to be taken by the French people, if we fail to do so? I believe that the President should take action on this matter, and that we should send a delegation of observers to France to find out whether democratic principles are being violated."@en1
