We voted in favour of this joint resolution, to which we also contributed, because we feel it is urgent to eliminate continuing and violent trends of racism and racial discrimination against Roma, and are conscious that any form of impunity for crimes motivated by anti-Gypysism and Romaphobia plays a role in weakening the rule of law and democracy, tends to encourage the recurrence of such crimes and requires resolute action for its eradication. 8 April has been designated International Roma Day and is considered to be the annual day of celebration for Roma, as well as an opportunity for raising awareness about Europe's largest ethnic minority and the extent of its social exclusion. We feel it is important to vehemently condemn, once again, all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against Roma. We expect their rights to be upheld in all Member States and that the Member States adopt the measures needed to combat the negative images that lead to discrimination, to hatred and to racism towards Roma and to combat ‘Romaphobia’ in all its forms, at local, regional, national or European level."@en1
