"Mr President, two days ago a four-year-old girl was killed in my constituency after being hit by a car in front of her mother. The enormity of the grief that such a catastrophic event can bring to a family is difficult to comprehend and impossible to describe. Unfortunately, such tragic occurrences are happening daily and in great numbers in one part or another of our Union. Road traffic accidents are in fact the commonest cause of death of children in Europe today. This is a shameful and totally unacceptable statistic for a civilised society such as ours. The slaughtering of our children on the roads must be stopped. Mr President, can I call upon you to personally contact all the European Heads of State and use your persuasive powers to impose upon them the urgent need to involve themselves in a serious, continuous and effective crusade to improve road safety, especially for children? I also suggest that efforts be made to establish a widely publicised blacklist of shame, in which the 25 Member States are ranked according to the number of children killed on the roads per head of population each year."@en1
