". The rapporteur’s proposal is in keeping with Parliament’s original position at first reading. According to the amendments tabled by Parliament, shipping emissions would be reduced by 80% by comparison with the year 2000, whereas the Council’s position would only serve to reduce them by 10%. Among the proposals tabled, I should like to highlight the rapporteur’s point that progress must be made in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the role that the EU could play in making that happen. The United States, Canada and Mexico have all sought to tighten up IMO agreements and the EU, especially given the recent accidents that it has had, can and must take action in this area. I also welcome the rapporteur’s suggestion of promoting the development of environmental technology by creating a market for it. The suggestions put forward in this area provide a more effective solution to protecting human health and the environment."@en1
