".
Mr President, I would first of all like to thank most of the speakers for their support for the European Union’s perspectives as I explained them a few moments ago. It is clear that the fight against malaria deserves Europe’s support more than ever. The Commission wants to ensure that this disease remains a political priority at global level and in our dialogue with the countries affected. As I said in my opening remarks, the fight against malaria requires efforts and resources in various areas of policy, such as research, trade and, of course, development cooperation and humanitarian aid.
The Commission will be presenting an action programme for continuing the fight against malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS through external action. We will be working in close cooperation with the Council, with the Member States, with you and with our strategic partner, the World Health Organisation. Europe must continue to help the countries affected to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, in particular the one concerning malaria. You can be sure that the European Union will make this fight one of its policy priorities."@en1
