"Mr President, road transport has become a mess of an industry which genuinely needs tidying up. At present, the law of the jungle prevails. Drivers’ crude working conditions have been discussed, as have the consequences for road safety. Tired drivers in large lorries are disastrous for road safety. Quite apart from this, however, the conditions of competition are completely awry. Transport by rail or sea, which is far better in terms both of the environment and safety, has no chance, of course, in relation to road transport, which is far too cheap. We are in favour of fair competition, and road hauliers should of course pay the real price for decent transport and not simply pass all the consequences of their activities onto society. Those who are opposed to better regulation and tighter controls have become vociferous mouthpieces for the most brutal part of the transport sector. With fair pricing through sensible regulation and firm controls, there are also better chances of other forms of transport that are safe and environmentally friendly being able to develop. That is the form of competition we want to see in Europe. It must be the best form of transport that is able to carry the day, not the most brazen or the most ruthless."@en1
