"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, earlier the President asked us to observe a minute’s silence in memory of Pope John Paul II. Taking my cue from this significant occasion, I should like to call upon the European Parliament to work together with the Apostolic See to organise a conference on employment, to be held before the end of the year. The issue of employment, which is a major problem faced by Europe, the European Union and the whole world, was very dear to the heart of the Polish Pope, who believed that help should always be given to unemployed people. I believe that this issue is one that could unite both believers and non-believers, and by believers I mean both Catholics and those of other faiths. It is for this reason that I am calling upon the European Parliament to hold a conference of this kind this year in conjunction with the Apostolic See. I believe that this would also be a fitting tribute to such a great man."@en1
