"I believe it is of the greatest importance for EU agricultural policy, including the organisation of the market in sugar, to be reformed. The present system costs a lot of money. Moreover, today’s high agricultural subsidies involve EU products being dumped on the world market, something that has serious consequences for the developing countries. Today, the European Parliament has voted on a resolution subsequent to an oral question put by Mr Daul and Mr Fruteau. I chose to vote against the resolution as a whole since it is mainly oriented towards maintaining the status quo. Sugar producers in certain developing countries too will be affected by the reform of the common organisation of the market in sugar. The current system is not entirely to their disadvantage. Their situation should not, however, be remedied through a less far-reaching reform of the sugar market. Instead, these countries should be supported through other measures such as increased development cooperation and technical trade support."@en1
