"The Labour members voted against this resolution for a number of reasons. Firstly, we think it is bad for the World Trade talks because it undermines the seriousness of our commitment to a genuine reform of the world system. We voted against it because we think it is bad for farmers: farmers need certainty above all and this resolution would not provide that. We voted against it because we think it is bad for the European food industry: half a million European jobs depend on industries that use sugar and they will be facing higher sugar prices than the rest of their competitors throughout the world. And we voted against it because we think it is bad for the developing world. We will still be taking badly needed markets from developing countries.
We hope that Parliament will think again and that when the Commission brings forward its draft legislative resolution we can have a different debate and a different approach to this issue, because the resolution we are adopting today simply does not solve the problems of the European sugar market."@en1
