". Today we are to vote on the mid-term review of the Lisbon Strategy. At a time when 68 million of our fellow citizens in the European Union are still living in poverty, the only option open to us is to endorse the Lisbon Strategy adopted in 2000 and to reiterate the goal of eliminating poverty. Progress has been made in certain areas, such as the National Action Plans on Social Inclusion and the incorporation of the fight against poverty as a goal in the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. Yet we cannot stop there; we owe it to our fellow citizens to stay the course. They expect us to make good on our promises, and I would urge that all the necessary measures be put in place at the Spring Summit."@en1
