". Since the United States is applying the tariff band for pliers that it negotiated in the Uruguay Round, it is in complete compliance with its current World Trade Organization obligations. While in these negotiations the US might have got a good deal in the pliers sector, the EU certainly obtained a favourable result in other industrial sectors, in which EU exporters are better off than their US counterparts. Looking at the whole range of industrial tariffs, the honourable Member will note that both the US and the EU maintain high import tariffs in some sectors, but not necessarily in the same ones. I would like to add that the Commission negotiators in the Doha Development Agenda Negotiating Group on Non-Agricultural Market Access are well aware of the problem raised by the Member. In the current WTO round, the EU has shown its clear commitment to bringing down industrial tariffs further, especially in respect of such an important EU export market as the United States. The Commission is confident that it will succeed in this."@en1
