"Mr President, the Figueiredo report relates to a matter of supreme importance, namely the social situation in the European Union.
I should like to highlight four issues. Firstly, paragraph 18 refers to solidarity with the new Member States. I believe the concept of solidarity should appear in the opening lines of the report, as it is one of the fundamental concepts upon which the European Union is based. Secondly, paragraph 22 refers to the European social model, and I believe that this should also have been given greater weight. It is not enough to preserve and consolidate this model. It should also be adapted to the needs of today and the anticipated needs of tomorrow. Thirdly, the report notes, and rightly so, that too little attention has been paid to social aspects in the Lisbon strategy. Finally, paragraph 4 states that social and integration policies are central to citizens’ rights and also to economic development, which is entirely correct."@en1
