"Mr President, someone once described the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva as the annual human rights circus. After all, in recent years, it has turned out several times that the show has been run by countries that are known for violating human rights. By concluding strategic alliances, they stand by each other and even manage to give each other pats on the back. It is high time the make-up of the UNCHR, as well as its voting procedures, were subjected to a thorough overhaul. If not, it is at risk of being sunk by its own lack of credibility. The European Union also carries a major responsibility in this. It must work towards more coherence and more consistency in its human rights policy. The EU should finally play a pioneering role, so that the 61st session does not end up being an unnecessary ceremony, but an efficient and credible consultation producing fair, and above all, concrete, results."@en1
