"Mr President, Europe must keep hope alive for both peoples, and the only way to do that is to keep the hope of a lasting peace alive. For this we must try to put the two-state solution and a peaceful and total end to the occupation at the top of the agenda. Withdrawal from Gaza is a hopeful step, but it cannot be the final horizon. Without the involvement of the United States of America, this cannot be achieved.
Mr Abbas has set a huge agenda for himself: stop the violent Intifada, reform the security forces, create a viable Palestinian State and create a lasting peace with Israel. We must fully support his agenda, again, to keep hope alive for both peoples. We can actively help him now to fight corruption, further promote democracy in Palestinian institutions and support good governance – things the Palestinians desperately want– because for this we do not need the United States. We should offer our complete assistance as soon as possible by asking Mahmoud Abbas how we, the European Union, can help further."@en1
