"Mr President, today commemorating the atrocities of the Shoah we still have lessons to learn. The Middle East is far from being free of racism, xenophobia and hatred. Palestinian textbooks which are sponsored by the EU are still full of anti-Semitism, explaining Zionism as the source of the word ‘evil’. The Palestinian elections represent a light at the end of the tunnel. The work done by the EU was very good. The representation of women was very good. Second place for Mustafa Barghouti is a democratic dream. Nevertheless, cautious optimism must be our stand. We should offer an opportunity to Mahmoud Abbas to conciliate security forces, to come up with legislative and economic reform. We should strengthen the position of the Quartet, instead of confusing it with the Geneva initiative. We should also be aware of the very sensitive situation in Israel. We should, today of all days, recognise the right of Israeli people to self-defence, the right of mothers and fathers to secure the lives of their children by that unfortunate security measure, the security wall. It is not yet time to dismantle it, not until Hamas no longer has the upper hand in security in the area. We know there is not only Palestinian and Israeli extremism, there is very much a Syrian plot against democratisation, spreading its Hizbollah know-how, men and weapons to the Gaza Strip even before this engagement. How ready are we to put pressure on Syria? How ready are we to use the tool of association agreements for the good of peoples in the region? Mr Solana, coming from Prague, in a post-communist country, I would like to ask you one question. You said in a press release after the Euromed ministerial that the Barcelona Process did not entirely materialise because of certain circumstances at national levels. I would like to ask you what we are all going to do for true democratisation and to encourage democracy in the Middle East."@en1
