"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the mere fact that presidential elections took place in the Palestinian Territories for the first time in nine years, and that they took place in a calm atmosphere, despite the Israeli occupation, can be regarded as a success. It was entirely appropriate that these elections were observed by the largest ever delegation from this House, as this is proof that the EU attaches great importance to the situation in the Middle East, and that it supports the peace process in the region.
Yet there are still those who are opposed to peace in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. We must encourage both parties to resume peace negotiations, as we all want the Israelis to live in peace, without terrorist attacks, and the Palestinians to regain their lost dignity. Neither of these can be achieved without the creation of a Palestinian State. The Palestinians are the weaker party in the negotiations, and my sympathy lies with them."@en1
