"Mr President, today, fifty-seven years after the event, we are being given a golden opportunity to correct a mistake which cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. If, in 1948, when we gave shelter – a state – to Israel, we had done the same for the Palestinians, many people would have been saved; the wars which killed so many thirty to thirty-five years ago would probably not have taken place. The attack on 11 September might also not have taken place, if we accept the public explanation of the accessory to the event, Bin Laden. The death of Iphigenia brought a favourable wind for Agamemnon. The death of Arafat (sometime terrorist, sometime negotiator, sometime Noble peace prize winner, whatever served the status quo at the time) and also the death of Sharon's monocracy in Israel may perhaps bring the favourable wind of peace. If we do not act effectively and immediately, this golden opportunity will be lost. Terrorism will escalate, both state terrorism, which is cruder, but also the terrorism of independent marksmen. The United States appears to be changing course; it wants to leave, to turn away from the Middle East and go towards Russia, with everything that implies. We, however, live in the area, we shelter 40 million Arabs, we here in this place failed to give Jews the chance to live through the Nazi occupation. We must grab the opportunity now."@en1
