"On behalf of the PPE-DE Group, I would like to express how pleased I was to see how quickly after its appointment the European Commission started working. The recent strategic material clearly shows that the Commission has not only begun its work, but has also paid attention to the European Parliament. I would like to remind the House and members of the Commission who are present that last December this House adopted a resolution which defined the fundamental strategic goals of the Commission, namely those goals that the European Parliament wanted to see in the Commission. The Commission has clearly taken these goals into account. We expressed our desire for a competitive and dynamic Europe, and the Commission is talking about competitiveness, prosperity and creating job opportunities. We expressed our desire to see cohesion, the consolidation of European expansion and solidarity, and the Commission is talking about the same issues. We wanted European citizens to have a safe Europe. These goals were clearly defined in the Commission’s recently published material, and in the President’s presentation as well. This is the case, even if Members of Parliament sometimes make the Commission’s work more difficult. Let me remind you that last December’s resolution was initially backed by most of the main groups in Parliament, but our socialist colleagues reneged on their approval at the last minute. Now, however, socialists issued strident press statements before the Commission and Parliament sittings regarding their expectations of the Commission. Interestingly enough, these expectations included elements that they refused to sign or vote for at the last sitting in Strasbourg. This is why I am content to see the socialists approve of this material even though they would like to see these issues become a little redder. I would, however, like to draw the attention of the Socialist representatives, indeed of all representatives from all Groups, to the fact that creating job opportunities is not a socialist or liberal goal; it is not the goal of the Green Party or the People’s Party, but is in the interests of European citizens. This is what we are working for, this is what we are fighting for. It is perhaps hardly surprising that I, as a representative from a new Member State, am bringing to your attention that one of the important aspects of solidarity within the European Union is to work with increased effort to create cohesion between existing and new Member States. I am confident that Mr Barroso, former Prime Minister of Portugal, a country that has enjoyed the benefits of cohesion for a long time, finds solidarity important even outside the context of generations and social strata. Finally, I would like to express our appreciation that the President of Commission undertook definite and clear commitments that the Commission will avoid steps that conflict with the interests of European citizens and that it will refrain from legislation that interferes with the goals of competitiveness and creating jobs opportunities, or infringes the security of European citizens. I wish the Commission courage to be able to refrain from action from time to time."@en1
