"Mr President, unfortunately the adherence of the European Union and other imperialist industrialised nations to the philosophy of maximum possible profit for big business precludes the attainment of a substantial and satisfactory target – and this is borne out by scientific studies – for reducing emissions and limiting climate changes which will have catastrophic consequences for the future of the planet itself. The Commission's assurance that the greenhouse gas trading programme and other flexible mechanisms will protect rather than endanger the competitiveness of the economy of the European Union is not persuasive. Instead of reducing emissions in accordance with its objectives, it has increased them by 3 units, confirming how complicated, unstable and ultimately inefficient the method of combating climate changes voted in Kyoto is. Yet there are solutions; they just have to be promoted directly, not indirectly. They are measures for substantially reducing gas emissions, such as promoting renewable energy sources, using bio-fuels, making greater use of the thermal energy produced in power stations and providing substantial protection for and making use of forests to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Instead of which, we see insistence on ineffective measures such as emissions trading, which proves that, for the sake of the profitability of big business, solutions which really would reverse the dangerous developments for the survival of the planet are being cast aside."@en1
