". The Commission’s proposal is to ban the use of bottom trawls in certain areas that include the seamounts with the most sensitive habitats in the 200 miles around the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Similar restrictions are already in place in an area of Northwest Scotland. I feel that we must go further, and also ban the use of bottom gillnets. Indeed, this type of net also causes serious damage to ecosystems, particularly in the Azores exclusive economic zone, due to the volcanic and rocky nature of its seabed. Various studies have confirmed the sensitive nature of deep-water habitats, such as the deep-water coral reef, thermal vents and feeding grounds for fish of sea banks and seamounts."@en1
