"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I voted against the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey. This is a matter of principle for me. The European Union, founded in Rome in 1957, has always defined itself in Christian and democratic terms, based on Greek philosophy, Roman law and Christian faith. As a result of today's profoundly misguided decision by the European Parliament, we are abandoning this spirit of Rome. The former French President, Giscard d'Estaing, is quite right: it would indeed be the end of the EU as we know it. May God protect the West's Christian civilisation."@en1
