This proposal is the result of the authorisation granted by the Council of the European Union to the European Commission on 26 January 2004 to undertake and conclude negotiations with Mexico, with a view to the conclusion of an Additional Protocol to the Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement between the European Community and its Member States, of the one part, and the United Mexican States, of the other part, to take account of the accession of the new Member States to the European Union. The accession of the above-mentioned new Member States in fact requires a series of legal adaptations so as to place them on an equal footing in the customs, economic and competition fields.
