"Mr President, this is not a debate for or against Turkey: that would be a huge debate and I do not wish to be part of that game. This is a debate about our own future as part of a political project and about the legitimate right of Turks to benefit from the kind of growth and stability that can only be brought from Europe. It is our duty to find new kinds of relationships with our neighbours and allies, so that both goals can be made equally compatible without endangering the success of our own projects and dreams and making them collapse, which is what could happen if things are not done properly. Membership of the European Union cannot be the only option we give to our neighbours and friends. That needs to be said clearly. Other very clear options have to be kept in mind. Finally, the European leadership has ignored public opinion and the citizens of Europe too often. This time that neglect on the part of our political elite – treating our citizens as babies – could have catastrophic effects."@en1
