"Mr President, I would like to draw the attention of the House to a decision made in the Council a short time ago on live animal transport. I would like the House to join with me in expressing regret that agriculture ministers failed to reach an agreement on limiting journey times. They also failed to reach an agreement on rest periods for animals transported for meat and they failed to reach any agreement on stocking densities – the number of animals that can be put in one unit. These are all vital issues with respect to ensuring that we end the cruelty to which animals are currently subjected during live transport in Europe. It is deeply disappointing that, yet again, the Council of Ministers has failed to take into account and adopt the approach of the Parliament, which has consistently voted for an eight-hour maximum limit for the transport of live animals. The Council got it wrong. It should have persisted and tackled these important issues in order to end animal cruelty in the European Union."@en1
