".
Whilst I do not agree with some of the aspects of this Resolution, I voted in favour because I feel that, of all the proposals put before us, this one represents an acceptable compromise, particularly as regards point 5(a), which I consider fundamental, given that the final, reasoned, decision on retaining a Commissioner who has lost Parliament’s confidence rests with the President of the Commission.
The remaining compromises are generally aimed at improving working relations between Parliament and the Council, and this is something that I welcome. What remains is the question of subsidiarity. Regrettably, the compromise resolution did not include any call for compliance with this principle, which was contained in an amendment tabled by the Union for Europe of the Nations Group. The fact that that amendment was not adopted does not exempt Parliament, or the other European institutions, from complying strictly with the principle, in accordance with both the current Treaties and the future Constitutional Treaty. Consequently, this did not prevent me from voting in favour."@en1
