"Madam President, Mr Barroso, your new Commission has a big responsibility for European economic development and for ensuring that such development takes account of the environment and is characterised by a high degree of social responsibility.
The Lisbon process is now like an oversized elephant in an exclusive glassware shop, that is to say very difficult to handle. I hope that the new Commission finds the strength and courage to develop new working methods and to do some new thinking when it comes to what is, for Europe, such an incredibly important issue, that of sustainable economic growth. This is not a prestige project, but one that is enormously important for those who reside, and lead their lives, in the geographical area for which Parliament and the Commission together have very considerable political responsibility."@en1
