"We are now already seeing the effects. Glaciers are disappearing, the Arctic ice is melting and we have shorter winters and more storms, as well as natural disasters and environmental refugees. At the end of paragraph 2 of the resolution, there is a statement to the effect that, in the long term, everyone in the world must each be given the same emission quotas. This particular sentence places heavy demands on us to take drastic measures to reduce our emissions. We are stealing oil supplies not only from future generations, but also from the world’s poor.
When, now, we debate the climate issue, there is a risk of our looking five years ahead to the next election and avoiding taking difficult decisions, but the EU – Parliament, the Commission and the Council – must collectively avert their gaze from the prospects of re-election and dare to take decisions that radically reduce emissions. Otherwise, we are committing crimes against humanity and the earth and are in danger of ending up, in the autumn of our years, at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, eternally condemned by future generations. Always assuming, of course, that The Hague is not already under water by then."@en1
