". Mr President, Turkey has rules and regulations laying down the separation of church and state, and the secular nature of the latter, more strictly than do some of the current Member States. That is, in principle, not what the objection is about and nor is it mentioned by the Commission as such. Of a somewhat different nature is the discussion we just had, namely where practice is concerned, the situation and religious freedom, and problems, some of which have, further to your questions, just been discussed. The Commission will study this very closely and carefully, and, in this respect, if it is decided to open negotiations, those points will continue to be monitored very closely after these negotiations have started."@en1
