". Unfortunately Europe, like every other area of the world, is no stranger to natural disasters. There have been a number in recent years. I am sure that some of us will remember the huge floods in Germany and Austria only a few years ago. With the support of Parliament, the Commission has tried to put in place appropriate mechanisms, within the limits of the financial resources available. These included the monitoring of state aid – subsidies or contributions from national budgets – and also direct contributions from the Community budget. As regards the 'Tremonti Bis' law referred to in Mrs Sbarbati's oral question, the Commission was not questioning whether companies suffering the consequences of natural disasters should be helped. The issue was whether the way the law was formulated enabled that objective to be met."@en1
