"Madam President, the question is, in fact, whether or not a Commissioner can set aside his personal convictions when he is at work. As we are dealing with an area of policy that is very sensitive, namely civil rights, asylum policy, and immigration policy – an area of policy that will become more and more European in years to come, and so you need somebody on board who is the driving force behind that policy. Mr President of the Commission, or rather Mr President-designate of the Commission, you are implying, by the measures you have announced, that you do not have the right man for the job on your team. I still have my doubts. There are many reasons why I would like to vote in favour of your team, but there is one important reason why I hesitate to do so. I would therefore ask you to give me, before tomorrow lunchtime, arguments that will dispel my doubts."@en1
