"Mr President, a heated dispute recently broke out between the European Commission and the German Government over the ‘golden share’, or the opportunity for the state to retain control over strategically important companies. The Polish Government supported the German Government in this matter, which is an important one, if only because a number of other Member States, such as France, have abandoned none of their influence on national and international economies. On the one hand, it is entirely possible to understand the logic of those who strongly advocate a free market, viewing such advocacy as an attempt to implement the Lisbon strategy and an opportunity to close the gap with America in time. Yet on the other hand, it is obvious that a number of governments and nations wish to protect national economic interests, even though they support European integration. Mr President, I propose that a debate should be held in Parliament on this matter. This crucial issue must cease to serve merely as the ball in a game of ping-pong between the Commission and individual countries."@en1
