". I support this resolution on Iraq, the primary purpose of which is to voice our concerns for the welfare of hostages and to demand that everything possible be done to secure their early release. I deplore the fact that the resolution does not reflect the concerns of our citizens at the unlawful killing of Iraqis by the occupation forces. It does not address the question of how the current situation in Iraq evolved over the last two years and therefore fails to criticise the Bush Administration's defiance of the UN in its rush to invade Iraq. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has correctly described that invasion as an illegal act contravening the UN Charter. That question cannot be shelved. Therefore, it is particularly important that the Committee on Foreign Affairs urgently draw up, as recommended, a comprehensive report on the situation in Iraq, taking into account the consequences of the war and all problems relating to the withdrawal of the illegally occupying forces, rehabilitation, reconstruction and stabilisation in that country."@en1
