"Mr President, it is no easy task to run such an important political chamber, in which there are so many shades of opinion, which are themselves further sub-divided. I feel, however, that it was in the Conference of Presidents that, as far as I am concerned, I was really able to appreciate your qualities. I do not wish to indulge in what some would consider an example of our mutual admiration society, which would strike me as somewhat excessive, but at the moment when you have decided to leave this House – to which you have brought a great deal, both as a Member and as its President, although we have disagreed on a number of points, which is part and parcel of a democratic chamber – I wish to bear witness to the high regard in which you are held within our group and to express our recognition for the way in which you have dealt with people who represent a minority in this House. This is the measure of a true democrat. I can testify to this, Mr President, and wish to express our gratitude. I feel sure that you will not stray too far from the institutions, Mr President, so perhaps we shall see each other again. In any event, I wish you all the very best in your personal and family life. As for your political life, that is in the hands of others."@en1
