"Mr President, as a representative from Cyprus, I will attempt to dispel a few myths. Firstly, the Greek Cypriots
vote against peace and the reunification of the island in the recent referendum. They voted against a particular plan which would not have brought peace or reunification to the island. The plan legalises the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
The plan also stipulates that Turkish troops of occupation will remain in Cyprus forever and that Turkey – an invader of Cyprus – will be a guarantor of the independence of Cyprus. This means that a Member State of the European Union will be under the guardianship of Turkey. This is the main reason why Greek Cypriots did not vote for this plan. There is only one way that Cyprus can be reunified and peace restored: the Turkish troops of occupation must be withdrawn from Cyprus."@en1
