"Mr President, as I hope everyone in this House knows, EUR 5 million went missing at Eurostat. I believe this is an unacceptable waste of taxpayers' money. Taxpayers whom I represent across the United Kingdom's capital – in Barnet, Enfield, Croydon – are concerned that the tax they are paying, which is channelled to the European Commission, is not being properly accounted for. This is a situation that has gone on for far too long.
Just a little over five years ago it was said of the Santer Commission that it was difficult to find anyone with the slightest sense of responsibility. It saddens me that the situation has not changed and it saddens me that so many people in this House voted for business as usual. For these reasons I voted to support this motion of censure because it is unacceptable that the Commission should continue to evade responsibility for its actions and vital that it should continue properly to police the funds which the taxpayer entrusts to it."@en1
