".
We reaffirm our ongoing solidarity with the Cypriot people in their fight against military occupation by Turkey and in their struggle for their country to be reunified.
We believe it is a matter of principle and a fundamental requirement to ensure that the sovereign decision of the Cypriot people on its present and future – which falls to the Cypriot people alone – is respected, without any unacceptable interference, blackmail or pressure, in particular over the plan presented by the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 31 March, and which will be the subject of a referendum on 24 April. For this reason, we firmly reject any intention or attempt to renegotiate the Republic of Cyprus’s Treaty of Accession to the European Union, to consider Turkey’s accession to the European Union, when what are termed the ‘Copenhagen criteria’ have not in any way been fulfilled, or to ‘legitimise’ Turkey’s occupation of part of Cyprus.
Hence our vote against the resolution, which did not even consider the amendments tabled by our group."@en1
