". I voted against the report on Turkey’s progress towards accession, since, quite apart from the report’s position stating that Turkey does not fulfil the required criteria to accede, I am opposed in principle to Turkey joining the EU. Turkey does not belong to the continent, geographically speaking, and Europe must establish coherent borders. It is for this reason that I welcomed the possibility of proposing a privileged partnership, as envisaged in the future European Constitution. While Parliament does not support this approach, I feel that Turkey’s accession would run counter to the construction of a strong and coherent political Europe."@en1
