lpv:translated text	". Two years on from the introduction of the single currency, it is time to assess the state of the euro and to provide solutions to certain problems that have been diagnosed. The aim is, above all, to protect the public from any kind of fraud and to safeguard the currency. The fact is that there has been a growing number of cases of fraudulent use of fake euro coins in coin-operated machines, and current national and Community law has not proved effective enough to address the problem. As the number of Member States in which the euro circulates is set to increase, it is becoming more urgent and necessary to adopt measures in this respect. The proposal bans certain levels of similarity in medals and tokens similar to euro coins, and also sets out guidelines for those companies producing such medals or tokens. Industry representatives have been widely consulted and are in favour of the proposed regulatory framework. At the same time, the scope of the regulation is to be extended to those countries which have concluded agreements with the EU on the use of the euro, such as Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican City.
