This regulation is intended to respond to the action plan on Economic and Monetary Union, adopted by the Ecofin Council on 18 February 2003, with a view to remedying the shortcomings in EU statistics on the economic behaviour of families and businesses and will make it possible, in particular, to monitor households' saving and consumption and the profitability of financial and non-financial businesses. Breaking the statistics down by economic sector will undoubtedly improve the information provided by the quarterly financial accounts, clearly ‘imitating’ the way things are done for the US Federal Reserve. We find nothing to object to in the proposal itself. Nevertheless, what could be considered to be a purely technical issue, which serves information purposes only, is closely linked to the support and direction given to economic policy and above all, to monetary policy in the European Union. These are tools for adjusting economic policy decisions, since these policies prop up the single Economic and Monetary Union, which lacks precise statistical instruments. To put it clearly, these are also tools that help to strengthen the Union’s right-wing and anti-social policies, although they do provide some useful information."@en1
