lpv:translated text	". On 1 May, ten new Member States will join the EU, under the Accession Treaty, which was signed on 16 April 2003 in Athens. These countries have made strenuous efforts to comply with the EU’s demands, with particular regard to institutional and economic issues. I shall therefore vote in favour. I should, however, like to raise two points. The first of these relates to Cyprus, a country that has still not been reunited. The Cyprus question remains the greatest political issue to be resolved. It strikes me as essential, therefore, to put all our efforts into supporting negotiations towards a settlement between the Greek Cypriot side and the Turkish Cypriot side. My second point concerns the rapporteur’s maximalist tendencies towards federalism, which all opinion polls, including Eurobarometer, are unanimous in dismissing as unrealistic because the majority of Europe’s citizens do not feel it makes sense and do not want it."@en1
