"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the House finds itself today face to face with a problem of political ethics. We are voting on a very important report, one that has a wide-ranging impact on economic affairs and on the citizens of Europe. How are we going to explain to the citizens of Europe that Parliament’s rapporteur, the person most directly involved with this dossier, happens to be married to Mr Fourtou, the chairman of Vivendi Universal? Let there be no confusion. I certainly recognise that every man and woman has the fundamental right to hold political office. Mrs Kinnock is a Member of the European Parliament but she does not get involved with subjects relating to the portfolio held by her husband, Commissioner Kinnock. Mr Rovsing, a member of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, has interests in the media, but he refrains from voting on media issues.
The credibility of the European Parliament is at stake here. I appeal to the President of Parliament and to the Chairmen of the political groups to find a solution to this problem by noon. Parliament’s honour is at stake. Any suspicion of personal interest must be eliminated if the citizens of Europe are to continue to trust the European institutions."@en1
