". The aim of this regulation is to reduce the incidental catching of cetaceans such as dolphins and porpoises in fishing nets, which is threatening the conservation of this species. There are insufficient data to enable a precise calculation to be made of the number of by-catches of cetaceans in fishing nets and of the impact of these catches on populations. There are, however, scientific papers proving that the majority of the fishing nets most commonly used in Europe are responsible for some cetacean by-catches. By establishing new measures designed to combat cetacean by-catches, this proposal for a regulation not only provides a response to the scientific papers but also makes a significant contribution to eradicating catches of cetaceans whose conservation would otherwise be threatened. Hence my vote in favour."@en1
