". I accept the final point the Member made, which illustrates something of the complexity of this issue. There are specific cases that come to mind. Young medical graduates, for example, may well choose to work on an agency basis because it is more flexible and suits them better. We are aware of that. The second point that Mr Crowley touched on was the general question of the rights of contract workers. I recognise the importance of securing agreement on proposals that improve the rights of workers, including temporary agency workers, but which at the same time do not force anybody to operate in a way they would not wish to. As I have said, the presidency sees this as an important issue, not least within the context of the Lisbon strategy. The Member will be aware that we are committed to achieving the Lisbon goals of increasing employment and providing better jobs, and that includes more choices for workers. The point raised in the original question was that this should not be achieved on the backs of the workers; that is the core issue of concern to Mr De Rossa. The point has been made that this is a complex matter. There are different views on the issue and as the last supplementary question illustrates, there may be circumstances in which workers wish to benefit from this more flexible approach. Clearly their right to choose should not be interfered with in a way that would diminish that right."@en1
