"We have just expressed our opinion on the revision of pharmaceutical legislation. The modified directive will allow a greater degree of harmonisation between the Member States when it comes to the rules governing medicines. It may increase the effectiveness with which the centralised and decentralised procedures operate. We want the Member States to ensure, however, that preference is given to homeopathic medicines manufactured and marketed in the Community. We have voted in favour of the amendments that could resolve a number of problems caused by the legal vacuum in which certain homeopathic medicines still exist. Not only do these medicines, used by more than a hundred million Europeans, not have side effects, but they also enable the health services to make savings. We are definitely keen to preserve those homeopathic medicines that meet the demand from our countries’ citizens. We have also come out in favour of developing Europe’s generic pharmaceutical industry, for, if we want to preserve our social protection, we have to make savings, and generic medicines help us do that."@en1
